You've been told to be the nice one
for so long you don't recognize the man
in the mirror—and you still can't figure out
why she keeps choosing someone else.
This is the field hub for the Relationships field — the territory that comes before the covenant of marriage. Dating, courtship, attraction mechanics, and what a Christian man actually needs to know about women before he commits. We name what the church got wrong. We show what Scripture actually teaches. And we lay out the architecture for becoming the kind of man a woman can follow into a covenant.
Covenant Pursuit
The Scriptural pattern in which a man — having become someone first — initiates toward a woman with the intent of marriage, not exploration. Pursuit is not chasing. It is not negotiation. It is a man with a settled identity, a mission outside the relationship, and the spiritual authority to lead, choosing one woman and moving toward her with the seriousness of covenant. The opposite isn’t aggression. It’s drift. The opposite isn’t restraint. It’s the modern dating economy, which has produced more lonely Christian men than any other arrangement in church history.
Christian men need to understand that attraction in a covenant relationship is built before the ring, not after it. The man who erases himself in the name of niceness, agreeableness, or “guarding her heart” cannot generate the pursuit a woman is designed to respond to. What women select for is not kindness in isolation — it is a man who has a settled sense of self, a mission outside the relationship, and the spiritual authority to lead. A man builds himself first. Then he is in a position to choose, not chase.
“You’ve been alone for a long time, brother. Not in the obvious way. You’ve had the dates. The two-month relationships. The three friends-since-college who keep telling you she’s lucky to have whoever finally locks you down. You’re employed. You go to church. You shower. From the outside, you should be fine. From the inside, something keeps not working. She liked you. You’re sure she liked you. Then somewhere around week four she got distant. And the math wouldn’t add up, because nobody ever taught you the equation. Hear this clean — this is not your character defect. This is missing instruction.”
Four drivers, ranked by load.
Christian men have been taught that attraction is produced by niceness, but attraction is produced by frame, mission, and distinctness. Niceness without those three reads to a woman’s nervous system as the absence of a man. The biblical pattern in Genesis 2 establishes polarity as the architecture of the covenant — two opposites in proximity generating pursuit and response. A Christian man pursuing covenant marriage builds himself first: a settled identity, a mission outside the relationship, physical presence, intentionality, and spiritual authority. Then he is in a position to choose, not chase.
Identity before performance
The Matthew 3:17 architecture — the Father’s declaration over the Son precedes all ministry. A man’s identity must be anchored in God before it can be stable in a relationship. Without this, every woman he pursues becomes the source of his identity rather than the recipient of his pursuit.
Strength signal and selection
David Buss’s four decades of cross-cultural mate selection data document that women select for strength signal — voice steadiness, decisiveness, bearing, mission — at a rate disproportionate to stated preferences. The instinct is species-level, not cultural. It is from God.
Frame under emotional load
Frame is a man’s settled sense of self that doesn’t reshape to the emotional weather around him. It is built in the hundred small daily decisions where a man holds his position or abandons it. Habitual deference produces habitual invisibility.
The purity-culture wreckage
The 1997–2010 evangelical framework told a generation of Christian men that desire was suspect and pursuit was dangerous. The pastoral fruit was disastrous: marriages built on personality compatibility with no polarity, which collapsed within years of the wedding.
The Covenant Pursuit Framework: before and after.
The purity culture framework of American evangelicalism in 1997–2010 told a generation of Christian men that desire was suspect and attraction was dangerous, which produced marriages built on personality compatibility rather than masculine pursuit. Within two years of the wedding, attraction evaporated in many of those marriages because the polarity necessary to sustain a covenant had been filed down during courtship. The corrective is not the secular model of recreational sex but honest masculine pursuit toward covenant: a man who admits his attraction to a specific woman, communicates intent toward marriage, and brings the full force of his desire into the covenant when it begins.
| Category | Pre-Framework State | Architectural State |
|---|---|---|
| Pursuit | Drift — “let’s see where this goes” with no covenant intent | Directional — move toward covenant or end it cleanly |
| Attraction | Produced by niceness and agreeableness | Produced by frame, mission, and distinctness |
| Identity | Anchored in her reactions; collapses under pressure | Anchored in God; stable before she shows up |
| Leadership | Outsourced every decision; treated each choice as a committee | Decides calmly with input, takes responsibility for the call |
| Result | Friend-zoned, resentful, or married-but-roommates | A woman who can rest under his leadership and follow into covenant |

What Women Are Actually Attracted To
The strength signal hierarchy. What her nervous system reads for and why. Why her selection apparatus is designed by God, not broken by culture — and what that means for the man who wants to generate pursuit rather than approval.
Red Flags in Christian Dating
The signals most Christian men miss because they’ve been trained to see agreeableness as virtue. Character under pressure, consistency between public and private, the difference between her struggle and her pattern.
Two paths. One prerequisite.
Build the man. Then find her.
For the brother not yet covenanted. The route: establish frame and mission before pursuing. Learn the Boaz pattern — become someone on your own piece of ground, then recognize her when she walks in. Stop running the plays that were always going to fail. The blueprint isn’t lost; it’s been buried under thirty years of bad teaching. Dig it up.
The polarity rebuild.
For the man already covenanted but sensing the field has gone flat. The heat is gone and you can’t say why. Doubling down on niceness made it worse. The route: re-occupy the frame you abandoned, restore the mission that got subsumed, and rebuild the polarity that cannot be sustained if the man erases himself. The Marriage field carries this work.
